Nairobi's streets are filled with "bargain" gas refills. But what are you actually paying for?
It’s a tempting offer: a refill that’s KSh 300 cheaper than the official price. In a touch economy, every shilling counts. However, when it comes to LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), that small saving is often a down payment on a major catastrophe.
The "Air" You Pay For
The most common trick used by illegal roadside refillers is under-filling. Without high-precision industrial scales, these operators often fill a 6kg cylinder with only 4.5kg of gas, topping the rest with pressurized air or lower-quality butane mixes.
The Math: If you save KSh 200 on price but lose 1.5kg of gas, you are actually paying 15% more per unit of usable energy.
Valve Bypass
Illegal refillers often use crude "decanting" methods—pouring gas from one cylinder to another. This damages the internal safety valves, leading to slow leaks that can accumulate in your kitchen overnight.
No Pressure Testing
Certified cylinders go through rigorous "hydro-testing" to ensure the steel hasn't fatigued. Street gas cylinders are never tested, creating a risk of structural failure (explosion) during high heat.
The Safety Checklist
Always look for these three things to ensure your family's safety:
- Branded Shrink WrapThe seal must be thick, clear, and branded with the original manufacturer's logo (Total, Shell, K-Gas, etc.). If it's plain blue or clear plastic, reject it.
- Standardized WeightCheck the "Tare Weight" (TW) stamped on the cylinder handle. When added to the gas weight (e.g., 6kg), it should match exactly on a digital scale. At Maloo Gas, we weigh every cylinder in front of you.
